You can export it! And we tell you why there is no import feature!

According to Wikipedia, the DWF (Design Web Format) format is a file format developed by Autodesk for the efficient distribution and communication of rich design data to anyone who needs to view, review, or print design files.

During my early days as a young CAD engineer, the DWF file format was quite popular. I am talking about the late 90’s, and with the rapid growth of internet, we were witnessing the first of the “drawings” or “maps” getting displayed on the web browser – Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer those days.

Export DWF files from BricsCAD

A user asked me today if there is a feature to import DWF files in BricsCAD.

The answer is NO, and this is by design, not by omission.

DWF files were meant to display drawing information on the web, in a limited yet as-complete-as-necessary manner. It was meant to share information about your designs yet not reveal the complete intelligence of your designs. In many ways, the DWF format then is what the PDF format is today. In fact, the PDF has become the de facto standard for sharing of designs today, and back then, it was the DWF format. The SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is another comparable vector format which displays a scaled-down version of your drawing.

Today, the DWF format is legacy. Very few people use it, and some of the most vocal requests and questions concerning DWF seem to come from the Middle East region.

So, I guess that answers the question about the the purpose and intent of the DWF file.

You can export DWF files from BricsCAD but importing it is not possible as it does not make sense either. The DWF is an incomplete representation of your DWG and is only a visual imprint with just the layer visibility support. You cannot import it into BricsCAD and you should not attempt to do so either,
